Literacy Integrating Technology Documents (LITdocs)

In the summer of 2003, the document Think Literacy: Cross-Curricular Approaches, Grades 7 –12 was developed by a writing team commissioned by the Expert Panel on Students at Risk (Literacy), to support teachers as they use reading, writing and oral communication approaches in their classrooms. In the summer of 2004, teams of subject experts wrote additional subject-specific examples to help teachers combine the teaching of reading, writing and oral communication skills with their subject content. OCTE developed the LITdocs (Literacy Integrating Technology) to give technology educators strategies to develop reading, writing and communication skills in students across the technology curriculum.

These LITdocs resource documents are intended to:

  • blend the teaching of subject content and literacy skill development.
  • help students in grades 7 - 12 to further develop their communication skills, which, in turn, helps students be more successful in learning subject content.
  • serve as a springboard for teachers to design additional classroom resources.

For the first phase of this project, OCTE elected to develop resources for Grade 7-9, (based on grade specific common projects) while one of our special interest groups, the Secondary School Hospitality Educators of Ontario (SSHEO), developed a set of strategies for Grade 10-12 Hospitality and Hospitality & Toursim courses. Please note that while these LITdocs are created for spcific grades and projects, they can be adaptable to the wide variety of subject matter across the technology curriculum.
